Juice Fast Not for Everyone.
At my former job I had the opportunity to meet Joe Cross the creator, producer, and director of Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I was inspired. I ended up with a juicer and I juiced. I felt energized. I felt strong. If I went without it I felt sluggish.
A few months afterwards my ABFF (A = adult) did the Blue Print Cleanse and reaped wonderful benefits. She looks stellar and developed portion control and taste buds for healthier food options. Wonderbar!
Fast forward until recently very recently I decided to do a Juice Fast with Drea and two other friends. 3 days? Easy! Leading up the fast I just began logging my daily intake. I was meeting my goals consistently and doing well. Two days before the fast began I did have a trip to Boston for the Wine Expo and drank and ate really high quality wines and food (not large quantities).
Then…the fast started. Day 1 was pretty damn hard. My tummy grumbled. I grumbled. My tongue coated itself with white nastiness. I was miserable. Day 2 I could hardly remember because my head was KILLING me. Day 3 I felt GREAT. My stomach was flat and I felt FAB. Not hungry. No headache. Tongue still coated. But overall felt amazing. That lasted ONE day.
Today? I feel like I am making up for what I did to my body those 3 days. I pretty much threw my body into starvation mode. Yeah, yeah, yeah the juice is supposed to give you your nutrients to be able to function normally. And I guess I did (as I am not dead) but I messed up my metabolism. On top of that I was severely bloated days 4 and 5 probably.
I understand some people fast for days, weeks and even months. Me? No thanks. I’d rather do a raw vegan day often and still give my digestive something to process instead of letting it go completely dormant . You’d think my degree in Nutrition would have been enough to NOT do a fast but it could be a good challenge – mentally, physically and (even) spiritually and in this case - a form of bonding. But any nutritionist will tell you that your body’s organs (liver, kidney, skin, brain, lungs, pancreas and colon) are there to DETOX. If it’s about “cleansing” you can eliminate alcohol, caffeine and other un-organic, processed foods and beverages from your diet without putting your body into severe calorie deficiency and messing up your metabolism.
On that note, excuse me while I have my second “AM” snack in hopes that my metabolism gets back on par.
